Iran test-fires new long-range missile
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:10am (UTC)
Iran on Wednesday test-fired an improved version of its Sejil 2 medium-range missile, in a bid to bolster its defense capabilities.

The two-stage Sejil, powered by solid fuel, is capable of travelling 2,000 kilometers (1,240 miles). According to Al-Alam correspondent in the test field, the missile hit the defined target.

Iranian Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi said the test was aimed at bolstering the Islamic republic's defense capability and stressed that missiles will not be used for offensive purposes.

"The missile test that we witness today is one ring of our defense capability chain in line with increasing the armed forces' deterrent power," Vahidi said.

Iran's missile capability, he added, is "merely defensive and for peace, stability and calm in the region and will not be used against any country."

Vahidi said the latest version of the Sejil was "impossible to destroy" due to the "very high speed" at which it hits the ground. It also has anti-radar capability.

In late September, the Islamic republic test-fired the previous version of Sejil 2 (Lethal Stone) and along with another similar-range missile, the Shahab-3, and a host of shorter-range missiles as part of a military exercise.

NATO urges Moscow to cooperate on Afghan war
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:08am (UTC)
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen on Wednesday called on Russia to strengthen its cooperation on Afghanistan, asking Moscow to supply more helicopters for the conflict.

"Today I have invited Russia to strengthen Russia's terms of cooperation in Afghanistan," Rasmussen said after talks with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

"I have presented them with a list of concrete proposals. Firstly, I suggested a helicopter package," Rasmussen said.

"I think Russia could contribute in a very concrete way by providing helicopters, helicopter training and spare parts," Rasmussen added.

Russia had already provided the Afghan government with two helicopters for humanitarian purposes. It was not immediately clear from Rasmussen's comments if the new helicopters would be for Kabul or for NATO forces.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who was present at the talks, said Medvedev had already given an order to review the proposals

Abbas tenure as Authority chief extended
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:07am (UTC)
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) on Wednesday extended until further notice the tenure of Mahmoud Abbas as Palestinian Authority chief, PLO officials said.

Members of the PLO Central Council said Abbas, whose term ends on Jan. 25, will stay on until elections can be held.

Presidential and legislative elections called for Jan. 24 were cancelled due to a ban imposed by Hamas group on participation in the Gaza Strip.

The PLO Central Council also decided to extend the term of the Palestinian Legislative Council.

Abbas had repeatedly said he will not run again for the position but no date has been set for a future vote. Abbas "has decided to stay in his post," Tawfiq al-Tirawi, a PLO Central Council member, said.

The Central Council also decided there should be no resumption of peace talks with Israeli regime until a full halt to its illegal settlement building in the occupied West Bank, Tirawi said.

MKO terrorist group refuses to leave camp
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:06am (UTC)
The terrorist Mojahedin Khalq Organization (MKO) and their families have defied Iraqi police instructions to leave a border camp the government has ordered closed.

Police toured the camp reminding residents over loudspeakers of the deadline set by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki for their departure for alternative accommodation in southern Iraq but they refused to leave.

Maliki wants the members of the terrorist organization to move to the new camp with their families as a first stage towards leaving Iraq.

But People's Mujahedeen representative Mehdi Farahi told Iraqi officials residents would not leave Camp Ashraf, where they were installed by Saddam's regime 80 kilometres (50 miles) north of Baghdad in 1985.

The MKO has been blacklisted as a terrorist organization by many international organizations and countries including the United States.

In Iran, members of the Mujahidin Khalq organization are regarded as traitors for siding with the Ba'ath regime during the Iraq-imposed war on Iran (1980-1988)

US air raid kills 120 civilians in northern Yemen
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:05am (UTC)
US air raid against Shiite Muslims in north of Yemen has killed at least 120 civilians, Houthi fighters announce in a statement on Tuesday.

"The savage crime committed by the US air force shows the real face of the United States,"said the northern fighters, who often report the attacks by the Yemeni and Saudi fighter planes, on their website.

US officials have kept silence and have not commented on the incident yet.

The fighters posted videos on the Internet that showed people trying to clear rubble covering human bodies.

On Sunday, the fighters said at least 70 people had been killed in a Saudi air raid on a market in the northern town of Razeh.

In Geneva, a UN official warned against the situation in north of Yemen

"The humanitarian situation is deteriorating, notably for 200,000 people displaced by successive conflicts since 2004," Elisabeth Byrs of the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told reporters in Geneva.

"We demand full and unlimited access to these displaced populations as well as a halt to attacks on humanitarian convoys," Byrs said.

U.S.-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) accused Yemeni security forces of widespread abuses and the killing of at least 11 protesters in response to calls for secession in southern Yemen.

"Yemeni authorities are violating basic rights in the name of maintaining national unity," said Joe Stork, deputy director at Human Rights Watch's Middle East division.

"Southern Yemenis should have the right to peacefully assemble and express their opinions, even on critical issues like secession," he said.

Iran oil official rejects US fuel sanctions
Mohammed Yahya on 12/17/2009 at 12:03am (UTC)
A senior Iranian oil official rejected US fuel sanctions against the Islamic republic, saying they "do not cause any problems" to the country.

On Tuesday, the US House of Representatives approved legislation to impose sanctions on foreign companies that help to supply fuel to Iran.

"They cannot succeed," said Hojjatollah Ghanimifard, vice president of investment affairs at the state National Iranian Oil Company. "We have a long list of suppliers of gasoline," he said.

"We can receive the amount of gasoline we need," said Ghanimifard. "We do not even bother about these kind of sanctions."

The House bill authorizes President Barack Obama to levy sanctions on energy companies that directly provide gasoline to Iran, along with the firms that provide insurance and tankers to facilitate the fuel shipments
